Technology Launches EarthSmart Computing™ Initiative
Green
Computing Campaign to Drive Awareness for Environmental
Issues Relating to Energy Consumption and e-Waste
SAN JOSE, Calif. – 08/15/2007 -
Wyse Technology, the global leader in thin computing,
today announced its EarthSmart Computing™ initiative.
This green computing initiative aims to facilitate
an ongoing dialogue with the company’s customers,
partners, suppliers, as well as US federal state
and local government groups, about what can be done
immediately to reduce energy consumption and e-waste
in the computer industry.
"At Wyse, we’re passionate
about making our company a green computing champion,
and we’re committed to being a model for others
in our industry,” said Tarkan Maner, President and
CEO for Wyse Technology. “This is just the first
step, which will see thin computing play a more
prominent role in creating a long-term sustainable
energy solution for public and private enterprises
worldwide."
For Wyse, the first step is to
continue its efforts in developing and producing
the world’s greenest thin clients which have the
smallest environmental footprint possible. The company’s
R&D efforts continue to focus on developing
products which consume less power (less than any
other PC or thin client), last longer than traditional
PCs, have fewer parts to recycle and dispose, as
well as meet the most stringent environmental standards
including ISO 14001, ROHS certification and WEEE
directive.
Thin
computing is a key strategy for going “green” now
What most people don’t know today
is that thin clients, when coupled with modern servers,
are more ecologically friendly than PCs alone, and
far better than PCs with servers. Consider this
example: 1,000 PC users versus the same 1,000 thin
client users connected to a centralized server environment
over a one year period. Taking into account the
thin clients and servers, the thin client installation
delivers the following environmental benefits over
PCs*:
90 percent less energy used each
year (14,851 kW on TCs vs. 146,661 kW on PCs)
131,810 fewer kilowatts used each year
$11,784 (U.S.) saved in energy costs per-year (national
avg. of $0.0894 as of Dec. 2006)
102 fewer tons of CO2 put into the environment each
year.
This means for every 10 PCs replaced by thin clients,
users will reduce one ton of CO2 from being generated
into the environment. This example doesn’t even
factor in the additional air conditioning costs
required to cool PCs, which also produces more CO2.
In addition, thin clients produce 27 fewer tons
of e-waste headed for the land fill after six years
of use when compared to PCs. The end result is a
dramatically lower carbon footprint and a technology
solution which is truly environmentally friendly.
This, however, is just the first step for Wyse EarthSmart
Computing because the company will continue to spearhead
thin client innovations which have a lower environmental
impact including;
Developing thin clients which can take advantage
of Power over Ethernet or PoE technology. By doing
so, thin clients will no longer require a separate
power outlet but rather use an Ethernet port for
all energy use.
Work towards a “Zero-client computing” model. This
means removing a layer of circuitry associated with
storing a local operating system and applications
that make up the functionality of the thin client.
By doing so customers get a more energy efficient
device with no local operating system or applications,
yet capable of delivering a full PC experience to
the user.
Establishing a network of green alliances such as
Environmental Defense (www.environmentaldefense.org)
that help guide issues relating to product development.
"A big part of the solution to the problems
of climate change and energy usage will be technological
innovations," said David Yarnold, Executive
Vice President for Environmental Defense. "It's
going to take bold initiatives to lower CO2 emissions
and e-waste. The challenge ahead is massive but
innovation and technology are critical catalysts."
What
customers are saying
"Thin computing is so much
more energy efficient on so many different levels,"
said Sean Colt, Director of Information Technology
for Manteca Unified School District. "Thin
computers consume about 90 percent less power than
a PC and give off little to no heat which reduces
air conditioning requirements. As energy costs continue
to increase thin computing will play a vital role
in keeping them in check."
"We chose Wyse because their
thin clients could handle the rigors and dynamic
demands of working in a hospital and clinic environment,"
said Bill Lazarus, AVP of IT Architecture and Security
at St. Joseph Health System. “The fact that we will
reduce power consumption by 25 percent makes selecting
thin clients an easy decision."
About Wyse Technology
Wyse Technology is the global leader
in thin computing. Wyse and its partners deliver
the hardware, infrastructure software, and services
that comprise thin computing, allowing people to
access the information they need using the applications
they want, but with better security, manageability,
and at a much lower total cost of ownership than
a PC. Thin computing allows CIOs and senior IT professionals
to reduce costs, manage risk, and deliver access
to information. Wyse partners closely with industry
leaders Microsoft, Citrix, VMware, and others to
achieve this objective. Wyse is headquartered in
San Jose, California, with offices worldwide.
